Ferryland has an interesting history. By 1590 it was an established fishing station used by the French, Spanish and Portuguese. In the 1610s, it was the location of a number of short-lived English colonies. Then the territory was granted to George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, in 1620, who established a colony there. The town was destroyed by New France in 1696 and forgotten for centuries, In the 1980's excavations began and today it is an interesting historical site with reconstructed buildings.
