Great Shearwater

The Great Shearwater is a pelagic species, that is, birds that live at sea far from land all year except for a brief breeding periods. The Great Shearwater breeds on the remote Tristan da Cunha group of islands in the Southern Atlantic. It is among only a few species that breed in the Southern Hemisphere and then migrate to the Northern Hemisphere for June, July, and August.

We took a whale watching cruise from Grand Manan Island where we were staying. At one point, several whales pleyfully hung around close to the boat. The above picture and the next 4 are close ups of different parts of the whales from fore to aft.
