The American Black Duck, the Mottled Duck, and the Mallard are closely related. They can and do interbreed. Of the 3 the American Black Duck is in the most danger of being breed out of existence by the Mallard.

The female Red-winged Blackbird has caused an identification crisis for many American birders. Like thousands of others, the first time I saw it, I assumed with a closed mind that it was a male something and wasted a lot of time looking for a nonexistent male in my field guide. When you wake up and think could it be a female, you quickly learn a lesson.

For a bird that breeds in northwest Canada and most of Alaska, this gull seems out of place on the the first of May, The wing also doe not look right. I suspect it was injured and will remain on the Atlantic coast and not breed this year.

The Killdeer is sitting on what a Killdeer calls a nest, a shallow scrap in the ground in an open area. I was able to get several pictures without disturbing her
